A steep single-dose funnel helps because it deletes the one thing a stock hopper was never built to do: hold a tiny dose upright long enough to fall straight into the burrs. Hoppers are shaped to gravity-feed a standing reserve of beans pressing down from above, so a lone 18g dose has no weight behind it and just rolls around a wide, shallow cone hunting for the exit. Narrow that cone down to something closer to 60-70 degrees and there's nowhere left for the beans to do anything but drop.

A single light spray of water on the beans before they hit the burrs kills the static charge that's gluing your driest, lightest fines to the chute wall instead of letting them drop into the cup. Grinding fractures beans violently enough to build a real electrical charge, and that charge sits strongest on the smallest, driest fragments — exactly the ones that end up stuck to plastic and metal rather than falling through. This is the Ross droplet technique (RDT): the moisture doesn't do anything to the coffee itself, it just bleeds the charge away before it gets the chance to grab hold.

Bellows-purge the chute after every grind
A few squeezes of a rubber bellows into the chute straight after grinding physically dislodges fines that gravity and static never let go of on their own. Retention isn't just beans resting loose on a surface — it's grounds wedged into the corner where the chute meets the burr housing and packed under the lower burr, and brushing alone mostly just pushes loose grounds around the chamber rather than freeing them. Do it the moment the grind finishes, before you lift the portafilter away, and whatever comes loose lands in today's dose instead of sitting there stale until tomorrow's grind knocks it out.
Treat the dosing cup, not just the beans
Treating the dosing cup solves a second, separate loss that RDT never touches: grounds that go missing after the grind has already finished, clinging to the cup itself rather than the chute. Freshly ground coffee builds its own static charge from friction against the cup as it falls in, entirely independent of whatever you did to the whole beans beforehand, so RDT can solve the chute and still leave a visible dusting stuck to the cup wall. Wipe or condition the cup and you're closing the other half of the static problem, not doubling up on the first half.
What didn't make the list
No burr grinder actually hits zero — even well-regarded single-dose machines still land around 0.1-0.3g of loss depending on bean oiliness and humidity, so you'd still be doing the funnel, RDT and bellows habits above anyway. It's a several-hundred-pound answer to what's usually a funnel-shape or static problem you can solve on your current grinder for the price of a spray bottle and a bulb blower.
It looks like the obvious upgrade from a rubber bellows, but the propellant comes out genuinely cold and can push condensation into the burr chamber, and some cans leave a faint residue on oily bean surfaces that a plain bulb blower doesn't. A cheap photography bellows does the identical job of dislodging loose grounds without either risk.

How much bean waste is actually normal for a hopper grinder being single-dosed?
Somewhere between 0.3g and 1g per dose is typical for a hopper grinder that wasn't built for single dosing — on an 18g dose that's roughly 2-6% gone before it reaches the cup, with longer chutes and conical burrs usually sitting at the higher end. Purpose-built single-dose grinders can get under 0.2g, but half a gram on a repurposed hopper grinder isn't a sign anything's broken, provided the number stays consistent dose to dose.
Does misting beans with water (RDT) change the taste or slow the grind down?
No — a droplet or two evaporates within seconds under the friction of grinding and won't measurably affect extraction; if anything, tasters sometimes find it cleans up muddiness in the cup, because fewer fines are clinging to surfaces and skewing the particle distribution. It doesn't noticeably slow the grind either, unless you're drenching the beans rather than misting them, which is the sign you're using too much.
Is a single-dose funnel worth it if I only make one coffee a day?
Probably not straight away. At one dose a day the absolute weight you're losing is small, so RDT and a post-grind bellows purge — both free or near-free — get you most of the benefit without spending anything. Funnels earn their keep faster in households running the grinder several times a day, where small losses per dose compound into a real amount of beans over a month.
