Store things open and vertical, not lidded and horizontal

Closed containers do not just hide objects — for an ADHD brain they effectively delete them. The out-of-sight-out-of-mind problem is a working memory and visual cueing failure, not a character flaw: when there is no visual trigger in your environment, the object does not exist in your active awareness until something external prompts it. Lidded bins and closed drawers destroy that cue entirely. Open containers — bowls, trays, wall-mounted bins, pegboards — keep the object in your visual field even when you are not looking for it. The vertical part matters too: things stacked horizontally get buried, so only the item on top exists. Filing documents upright in a magazine holder, standing medicines in a caddy, hanging tools on hooks means every item has its own visible face. The goal is a space where scanning with your eyes is a complete inventory check.

Try it
Go through one drawer or cabinet and ask: would I still know this was here if I had not opened this just now? If not, move it to an open shelf, a clear tray, or a hook on the wall.
Replace any opaque lidded bin you use more than once a week with either a clear-sided container with a label on the front or an open-top bin. Lids are fine for long-term storage but catastrophic for daily-use items.
Mount a pegboard or use an over-door organiser for the category of thing you lose most — cables, medication, craft supplies — so every item hangs visible rather than nesting inside something.

Say the location out loud the moment you put it down

The ADHD brain encodes locations poorly not because it is lazy but because the attentional system is not reliably tagging the moment of deposit with enough salience to make it retrievable later. Verbal narration at the point of placement forces a second encoding channel — auditory and motor — on top of whatever weak visual trace is being laid down. Speaking engages your motor cortex, your auditory processing, and your language areas simultaneously. That multi-channel hit is much stickier than silent placement because it briefly interrupts the automatic, inattentive arc of putting something down mid-thought. You do not need to shout. Just say it: 'Passport going in the top left drawer of the bedside table.' One sentence, every time. It sounds absurd until you realise you have been finding the passport without drama for three months straight.

Try it
Pick one item you lose consistently — keys, phone, glasses, wallet — and commit for two weeks to saying its location aloud every single time you put it down, including specific physical detail: not just 'on the table' but 'on the right side of the kitchen table next to the fruit bowl'.
If you feel self-conscious, pair it with something you already do — narrate the location while you plug in your phone to charge, so the verbal habit attaches to an existing action.
When retrieval fails anyway, use the narration as a debugging tool: say aloud everything you remember about where you were and what you were doing when you last had the item. Verbalising the context often surfaces the location the same way it went in.

Photograph the exact location on your phone immediately after storing

Taking a photo of where you put something sounds like overkill until you understand what it actually does: it offloads spatial memory entirely from a system — working memory — that is structurally unreliable in ADHD to a system — your camera roll — that is essentially perfect. The act of taking the photo also does something subtle: it forces you to pay attention to the location for long enough to frame a shot, which is the deliberate encoding moment the ADHD brain keeps skipping. A dedicated album named something like 'where I put things' means retrieval is two taps, not a scroll through hundreds of photos. The method earns its friction for items you store infrequently — the extension cable you packed after redecorating, the spare key you hid sensibly, the gift you bought three months early — where episodic memory has no chance of holding the location.

Try it
Create an album on your phone named something short and functional — 'where is it' works — and put a shortcut to it on your home screen so accessing it takes no more than one tap.
Before putting any item away in a non-default location, take one photo of the item in context — wide enough to see both the object and the surrounding area so the exact location is identifiable, not just a close-up of the thing itself.
For items you store seasonally or rarely, add a quick voice memo or typed note in the photo caption: 'spare car key, back of the hall cupboard, inside the brown envelope, June 2026.'

Store things at the point of use, not in their logical category

Neurotypical organisation advice groups objects by type — all medicine in the medicine cabinet, all batteries in the utility drawer, all cables in the cable box. This fails for ADHD because it creates multi-step retrieval chains your brain will not reliably complete. The two-step rule matters enormously here: if putting something away or getting it out requires more than one action, the ADHD brain will route around the system and create a pile instead. The fix is to store things as close as possible to where they are actually used, not where they belong in a categorical sense. Paracetamol lives next to the kettle where you make the tea you drink with it. Chargers live at the exact spot you sit when you charge things. Scissors live in every room you cut things in. This feels like disorder but it is the opposite — it is encoding location through use-context, which is the spatial memory pathway that actually works.

Try it
Pick three things you regularly cannot find and ask: where in the house am I usually standing when I need this? That location is where it should live, regardless of what logical category it belongs to.
Buy duplicates of cheap items — scissors, pens, charger cables, paracetamol — and station one at each use-point rather than maintaining a single shared copy that migrates endlessly.
Audit your existing storage by asking 'is this organised for a catalogue, or for how I actually move through this space?' Rearrange one zone to match your real movement patterns and see whether retrieval improves within a week.

Use the 'if I were drunk, where would I look first' rule for permanent homes

This sounds like a joke but it is the most practically useful calibration tool for ADHD storage decisions. When you are tired, distracted, or mid-task — which describes every retrieval attempt — your brain defaults to its most automatic, low-effort assumption about where something should be. That assumption is almost never 'the logical place'; it is somewhere obvious, central, and visible. The mistake people make when setting up systems is designing for their organised self, not their depleted self. If the permanent home for something requires any memory, any planning, or any navigation, it will be wrong a significant portion of the time. The drunk test bypasses the logic entirely and goes straight to instinct, which is the faculty actually doing the retrieval.

Try it
When deciding where something should permanently live, close your eyes and imagine you have just woken up and need to find it in a hurry. Your first instinct about where to look is where it should go.
If the instinctive location and the logical location are different, always choose the instinctive one. Logic is not available at retrieval time.
Run this test on objects you have lost more than twice from their 'proper' place. The fact that you have lost something multiple times from a logical home is proof that location is wrong.

What didn't make the list

Colour-coded organisation systems

Every ADHD organiser on the internet loves these and they look good in photos, but they require you to remember what the colour means — which is precisely the kind of arbitrary, abstract mapping that ADHD memory drops. After about a week, 'blue means bathroom' stops being obvious and becomes a thing you have to consciously recall. Plain text labels stating exactly what is inside beat colour every time for actual retrieval.

Marie Kondo-style full declutter first

Reducing the number of objects does reduce the search space, which helps at the margins. But a full declutter is a massive executive-function demand — sustained attention, decision-making, emotional regulation about possessions — precisely the things that are hardest in ADHD. Many people spend a weekend on an exhausting whole-house sort, feel briefly better, then return to the same patterns within a month because the underlying encoding and retrieval problem was never addressed. Fewer objects in exactly the wrong place are still in the wrong place.

Questions people ask

If I know where everything should go, why do I still lose things constantly?

Knowing the correct location and reliably encoding that you put something there are two completely separate cognitive operations. The problem in ADHD is usually not that you lack a system — it is that the moment of deposit happens while your attention is already on the next thing, so your brain never properly records 'item X went here.' You can know perfectly well that your keys belong on the hook and still put them on the counter in an inattentive moment with zero memory of doing so. The narration and photo strategies above are specifically designed to force that encoding moment to actually happen.

I set up a system and it worked for two weeks and then completely fell apart. What happened?

This is very common and it is not a motivation failure. ADHD brains respond strongly to novelty — a new system provides a dopamine hit from the novelty itself, which masks the underlying friction. When the novelty fades, the friction becomes visible again. The systems that survive past two weeks are the ones with the fewest steps and the most environmental support: open containers you can deposit into without opening anything, locations so close to point-of-use that deviation requires more effort than compliance. If a system collapsed, the honest question is not 'why did I stop trying' but 'how many steps did this system require?' This is personal experience, not medical advice.

What about smart trackers like AirTag or Tile?

Trackers are genuinely useful for a very small number of items — keys, a wallet, the bag you always take with you. The problem is that using them requires you to open an app at the exact moment you are already frustrated and in a hurry, which adds a step precisely when you have the least patience for steps. They are worth using for the two or three items whose loss is most catastrophic, but they are not a substitute for a general location system and they do nothing for anything that does not have a tracker on it.
