The p-trap holds a small plug of water that physically blocks sewer gas from rising into the room. When a drain goes unused for even a few days, that water evaporates. A guest bathroom, a basement shower, a utility sink you only use on washing day — all of them are quietly losing their seal whenever the weather is dry and the heating is running. The intermittency is the tell: the smell correlates with how recently you used that drain, not with any defect in the pipe itself. Most people clean the drain endlessly and the smell comes back a fortnight later, baffled, because cleaning was never the problem.
Scrub the overflow hole, not just the drain itself
Every bathroom basin has an overflow — that small oval slot near the top inside the bowl. Most people have never cleaned it. That slot connects via a channel moulded into the ceramic directly to the drain below the plug, bypassing the p-trap entirely. Over months, biofilm of decomposing hair, soap residue, and skin cells builds up inside the channel and produces hydrogen sulphide. The smell is intermittent because it triggers on turbulence: run hot water, warm air rushes up past the overflow opening, and suddenly the whole room smells like a drain field. The smell people attribute to the drain is often coming from the stopper — specifically the greasy ring of biofilm that accumulates where the stopper meets the drain body. That is why the smell hits when you first turn on the water, then fades. The trap is fine; the stopper is a petri dish. Because the stopper sits above the waterline, no amount of pouring things down the drain reaches it.
Reseat the shower drain strainer and reseal the caulk bead
Shower drain strainers — the chrome disc you step on — are held down by two screws, and the gap between the strainer body and the shower pan is sealed with a thin bead of silicone. That silicone shrinks and cracks within a few years in a warm, wet environment. When it cracks, you get a gap that leads directly to the drain cavity below the shower floor, and that cavity connects to the drain-waste-vent stack. The smell is intermittent because pressure in the stack fluctuates: hot showers elsewhere in the house create convection that pushes gas upward, while cold periods let the gap sit dormant. People clean the drain obsessively and wonder why nothing improves, because no amount of cleaning closes a physical gap in the seal.
Inspect the clean-out cap inside the wall cavity

The smell vanishes for a week because the chemical smell masks it, and then it returns unchanged. Bleach is what almost everyone tries first, for months, before finding any of the actual fixes above.
Genuinely useful for slow drains caused by organic buildup over time, but marketed in a way that implies they address sewage smell, which they do not. If your smell is from an evaporating p-trap, a cracked strainer bead, or an overflow channel, enzymes do nothing. They are a maintenance product, not a diagnostic one, and people reach for them as a substitute for identifying the actual cause.

Intermittency is almost always the diagnostic clue, not a complication. The most common explanations: a p-trap that hovers near the dry threshold and only fails completely under certain conditions (hot weather accelerates evaporation, an extraction fan running for long periods can siphon a trap); biofilm on a stopper or in the overflow channel that only releases gas when disturbed by water movement; or a crack in a strainer seal or clean-out cap that only leaks when water creates pressure in the stack nearby. Pay attention to when exactly the smell appears — first thing in the morning, right after a shower, after the toilet is flushed, when the weather has been dry for days. The pattern points to the cause.
A dirty drain smells organic and musty — rotting hair and soap scum has a cloying, damp quality that lingers. Sewer gas smells sharper and more sulphurous, like rotten eggs, and it tends to appear in short bursts rather than sitting there emanating, because it is being pushed up by pressure rather than simply evaporating from a surface. If cleaning the drain improves things for a week and then the smell returns unchanged, you are dealing with gas intrusion rather than surface buildup, and the fixes are different.
Two culprits: either an extraction fan that runs long enough to create negative pressure and siphon the trap (test by checking whether the smell appears after the fan has been running), or a partial blockage further down the drain line that is creating back-pressure through the water seal. The mineral oil layer on top of the trap water buys more time between top-ups. If the trap empties quickly even with the oil layer, and there is no strong extraction fan nearby, the next step is a hand drain snake fed past the p-trap to clear a partial blockage in the 4 to 8 foot range — the zone where chemical treatments cannot reach.
