The matching problem is almost never about brands — it's that a 14cm round lid and a 14cm square lid often cross-fit, while two lids from the same brand but different product lines don't. Rim diameter is the only dimension that determines whether a lid actually seals. Once you measure the interior rim (not the outside edge — the bit that seats into a container) and mark it in permanent marker on the underside, the apparent chaos collapses into four or five families and the cross-brand fits become obvious. This also survives a second person using the kitchen, because the number is legible to anyone.

The fundamental problem with a flat stack of lids is that the one you need is always at the bottom, because the last lid you used went on top. If your lid sizes happen to match, they look great for about two months — until you buy one new container in a slightly different size and the whole system breaks. This only works if you actually throw away everything you already own, which almost nobody does. You can skip measuring if you're willing to do a physical matching session instead — pull everything out at once, spend 20 minutes test-fitting lids to containers, and mark matches immediately with coloured dots. Measuring is faster if you want a system that works even when containers and lids are stored separately; the dot method works better if you commit to always storing them together.
Assign them a silicone stretch lid (one set of five sizes covers most household containers) and keep them in rotation, or demote them to non-food storage — charging cables, craft supplies, screws. A lidless food container is a genuinely useful object; it just stops being a food-storage container.
The diameter-marking method helps here because the number on the underside of each lid is readable by anyone, not just the person who set the system up. Label the shelf slots with the corresponding diameter range so it's obvious where each group belongs.
