Lighter fluid (naphtha) is a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent, and most pressure-sensitive label adhesives are built from non-polar polymer chains — styrenic block copolymers with tackifying resins. The 'like dissolves like' principle means naphtha infiltrates the adhesive matrix and breaks its cohesion from the inside out. What makes it better than rubbing alcohol for this specific job is that naphtha evaporates very quickly and leaves zero oily film behind, so you do not need a secondary clean-up step. Warm the residue with a hair dryer before any solvent
Pressure-sensitive adhesives have a glass transition temperature — below it, the polymer chains are semi-rigid and gripping the surface; above it, they become viscoelastic and lose much of their bond. A hair dryer on its highest setting delivers enough heat to push most common label adhesives past their transition point. The critical insight is that you should apply heat before reaching for any solvent, not after. A warm, softened residue absorbs solvent far more readily than a cold, hard one, meaning your solvent of choice works in seconds rather than minutes. Heat alone is often enough to peel away residue that was unmovable when cold.

Use a rubber eraser on old, oxidised residue
Once adhesive residue has been sitting on a glass jar for weeks, it partially oxidises and loses its tackiness — it becomes more like dried rubber than sticky gum. At that stage, solvents are less effective because there is less polymer mobility to exploit. What works instead is mechanical abrasion with a material that has a similar coefficient of friction to the residue itself. A standard rubber eraser grabs the dried adhesive and physically rolls it into small grey worms rather than smearing it around the surface. This is precisely why it works on aged residue that oil and alcohol will not budge — the mechanism is friction and rolling, not dissolution.
Make a cooking oil and baking soda paste
This works through two completely separate mechanisms happening at once, which is why it outperforms either ingredient alone. The oil is non-polar and dissolves the non-polar adhesive through the same chemistry as any other oil-based treatment — but oil is too slippery to stay on a vertical surface long enough to work. Baking soda acts as a very mild abrasive that gives the paste body so it clings, and its fine particles mechanically disrupt the adhesive film as you rub. Together they loosen and physically sweep the residue off the surface. The combination is particularly good on glass and glazed ceramic because neither ingredient scratches those surfaces.
Use rubbing alcohol only after an oil pre-treatment
People go straight for rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), and it does dissolve adhesives reasonably well — but only for a few seconds before it evaporates, taking the dissolved adhesive nowhere in particular. The result is a thin, spread-out smear instead of residue removal. The underappreciated approach is to use oil first to loosen the bulk of the adhesive, wipe most of it away, and then finish with alcohol. At that point you are asking alcohol to dissolve a thin remaining film, which it does quickly and cleanly before it evaporates. Sequencing matters more than the solvent itself.
What didn't make the list
Hot water works well on the paper label itself but does almost nothing for the adhesive residue left behind after the label is already gone. Water is polar; label adhesives are non-polar. They do not interact meaningfully. Soaking a jar for ten minutes in hot water and then still scratching helplessly at a gummy patch is an experience most people have had and should retire.
Vinegar keeps appearing in home-cleaning content as a cure-all, but for pressure-sensitive adhesive residue specifically, its acidity does very little. Vinegar's active mechanism against limescale — dissolving calcium carbonate — is irrelevant to polymer-based adhesives. In practice it delays you from reaching something that actually works.

Yes, and it is the main thing to check before reaching for a solvent. Glass and stainless steel are inert and tolerate every method listed here, including lighter fluid. Plastics are the complication: petroleum-based solvents like lighter fluid and acetone can cloud, craze, or soften certain plastics — especially polystyrene and most painted or lacquered finishes. For plastic containers, the cooking oil and baking soda paste is the safest first option, followed by rubbing alcohol if you need more aggression. When in doubt, test on a hidden underside area first.
The adhesive on labels is a pressure-sensitive polymer — meaning friction and pressure are exactly the forces it was designed to respond to. Rubbing it spreads the polymer chains laterally across a larger area rather than lifting them away from the surface. You are, effectively, re-pressing the adhesive into a thinner, wider layer.
