The USDA's 40°F rule sounds simple until you realise you have no idea what temperature your fridge actually runs at — or what it has reached after three hours without power. An appliance thermometer (a two- or three-dollar dial type, not your meat probe) makes the call factual rather than anxious. Without one, guessing tends to go one of two ways: throwing out perfectly good food, or convincing yourself things are fine when they are not. The middle shelf, not the door, is where to put it — doors run warmest.

Use your freezer as a thermal battery for the fridge
A full freezer holds temperature for 48 hours; a half-empty one for around 24. Frozen food is essentially a stack of stored cold — and when you move some of that frozen mass into the fridge compartment, it dumps cold into the space for hours via the latent heat of fusion: melting ice absorbs a large amount of heat, which is why a block of ice cools far more effectively than an equal weight of already-cold water. If you know an outage is coming, filling empty freezer space with bags of water frozen in advance turns wasted air into useful thermal mass.
Use block ice in a cooler — not cubed ice
If the outage looks like it will run past four hours, stop trying to hold the entire fridge and concentrate your cold resources on what matters most. A decent cooler with ice will hold temperature for 24–48 hours if you keep the lid on — far longer than a fridge that has been losing ground for half a day. The thing people get wrong is reaching for a bag of ice cubes: block ice lasts two to three times longer because it has far less surface area exposed to warm air. Cold food chills a cooler; transfer items while they are still cold, not after they have been sitting at marginal temperatures.

The USDA's rule is that perishable food above 40°F (4°C) for more than four cumulative hours should be discarded. The common misreading is 'four hours total since the power cut' — but the clock only runs when the temperature has actually crossed 40°F. A packed fridge in a cool house may stay safe well beyond four hours; a half-empty one on a hot day may not make four. The other mistake is tasting to check: the bacteria that cause foodborne illness are odourless and tasteless at the concentrations that will make you ill. The USDA is explicit — it is not a reliable safety check.

Sounds intuitive, and people try it, but it doesn't work: fridges are already well-insulated boxes, and adding blankets to the outside doesn't meaningfully change that. The thermal mass is inside — in the food itself — not in the cabinet walls. The effort is better spent on the cooler.
It is genuinely effective, but it requires handling precautions (never touch it barehanded, ventilation requirements to avoid CO2 build-up) that turn a logistics article into a safety lecture. It is also hard to source at short notice in most residential areas, and it is overkill for the typical 6–24 hour outage most people face. Regular ice and a decent cooler do the job without the complications.
