The mystery-cord anxiety is almost entirely caused by sorting cables by appearance rather than function. A black USB-A-to-micro looks identical to four others, which is why you end up keeping all five. If you plug each cord into whatever it powers first, a significant chunk of the drawer turns out to be duplicates of things you already have covered — and you can throw duplicates out without guilt. The ones that connect to nothing you own are the ones that have been haunting you.
Photograph the unusual end, not the USB end
Every mystery cord identification system fails because people photograph the USB end, which tells you nothing. The proprietary or unusual end — the barrel connector, the weird flat plug, the DC tip — is the identifying feature. Once you have a photo of the non-standard end, reverse image search or a subreddit like r/whatisthisthing will identify it within minutes. This sounds obvious until you realise almost nobody does it.
Use a quarantine box with a date, not a maybe pile
The reason people never throw out old cables is the asymmetry of the mistake. Tossing a cable feels irreversible; keeping it costs only drawer space. The fix is externalising the decision with a time limit. All unidentified cables go into a labelled box with today's date on the outside, sealed and put somewhere inconvenient. If you have not needed anything from that box in six months, you have empirical evidence you do not need any of it. Throwing out a sealed box you have not opened is psychologically much easier than discarding individual cables one at a time.
Dedicate one short cable per fixed location, stop pooling them
The cable drawer problem regenerates itself because cables are treated as a shared pool that gets used and never returned. The mental model should be infrastructure, not inventory. A 30cm cable clipped to the back of your desk is not available for borrowing; it lives there the way a light fitting lives there. Once you stop treating cables as portable objects that belong in a central store, the drawer stops being restocked with rogue cables from around the house. Short cables are also significantly harder to borrow because they barely reach anywhere else.
Run the cable diet when a new device arrives, not once a year
Cable drawers do not fill up slowly — they fill up in discrete events: a new laptop arrives, an old phone gets replaced, someone moves in. The reason the annual clean-out never sticks is that you are fighting eighteen months of accumulated guilt all at once. Doing a five-minute version every time you unbox a new device catches the problem at the moment the obsolescence actually happens. The old micro-USB cable is easy to throw away the week you replace the device. It is almost impossible to throw away two years later, by which point it has acquired a feeling of potential.
What didn't make the list
They work fine for cables that live permanently behind a desk. For a junk drawer they fail because you have to undo and redo the tie every time you pull a cable out for temporary use, and within a few uses you stop bothering. The drawer fills up with loose ties and half-tied cables, which is somehow worse than before. Any system that fails non-gracefully is worse than no system — at least with no system you know you do not know.
They look good in the product photos and stop working after the first week. The compartments are almost never the right size for the specific mix of adapters and cables you actually own, so you end up forcing things in and the lid stops closing. You also cannot see what is inside without lifting the lid, which means you stop using the system and start piling things on top of it. The identification and culling steps have to come first — hardware cannot substitute for decisions.

Measure the outer and inner diameter of the barrel tip with a cheap digital calliper — they cost about £6 and the measurement alone narrows it to two or three types. Common sizes are 5.5mm outer / 2.1mm inner and 5.5mm outer / 2.5mm inner, but there are dozens of variants. Pair the measurement with any voltage printed on the device it came with (often on a small label on the bottom of old routers or speakers) and you can usually make a confident identification. If there is no device to check, photograph the connector and post it to r/whatisthisthing with the measurement included.
Most cables contain copper and sometimes other metals that should not go to landfill. In the UK, many councils collect small electricals separately at the recycling centre, and most supermarket car parks have electrical-waste collection points. In the US, Best Buy and Staples both take old cables at the store. The effort is genuinely low once you know where the drop-off is, and working cables can also go on Freegle or Freecycle — someone will take an old phone charger.
One spare per device you genuinely depend on is reasonable — one backup phone cable, one backup laptop cable if yours is showing signs of fraying. More than one spare of any given cable is optimism you are unlikely to need. Cables in practice tend to fail slowly and visibly, not suddenly with no warning, so the scenario where you desperately need a spare you do not have is rarer than the cable drawer would have you believe.
