A hard, spitting perk doesn't brew coffee any faster — it just extracts the bitter compounds faster while blasting hot coffee out through the knob and burning through fuel you carried in. Once percolation is actually happening the water's already boiling, so more heat from that point just turns a gentle cycle into a violent, uneven one that scorches the grounds sitting closest to the base. Most people do the opposite of what works, cranking the heat up the moment they hear the first perks because louder sounds like progress — that's exactly the moment to back off instead.
Read the knob's colour, not the clock
The 'brew for eight minutes' on a recipe card is someone else's average from a different stove, a different wind and a different altitude, so the only timer that actually applies to your fire is the coffee itself darkening in the glass knob on top. Watch it: the liquid shooting up starts pale and almost clear, then gets visibly darker with every cycle as more coffee dissolves into the water. The moment it holds a rich, consistent amber-to-mahogany brown for a perk or two in a row — not still visibly darkening — it's done, whether that lands at six minutes or eleven.
Add perk time for altitude, not heat
Water boils at a lower temperature the higher you camp, so a percolator perking away exactly like it does at sea level is actually forcing cooler water through the grounds and quietly under-extracting the whole pot. Boiling point drops roughly 1°F for every 500 feet of elevation, so at a campsite around 8,000 feet water is boiling closer to 197°F instead of 212°F — and turning the flame up higher doesn't make boiling water any hotter, it just makes it boil harder and burns fuel for nothing. The pot looks like it's working exactly as hard as it does at home; the water inside just isn't.
Splash in cold water before you pour
A spoonful of cold water dropped in right after you pull the pot off the heat shocks the liquid enough that fine sediment drops to the bottom faster than gravity alone would manage, saving you the gritty last mouthful percolators are notorious for. The cold shock kills the convection current that's been keeping fine particles suspended throughout the brew, so once that current stops, the grounds fall out of the liquid almost immediately instead of drifting for minutes. It's a genuinely old trick with a real mechanism behind it, unlike its more famous cousin the eggshell.
What didn't make the list

Bags with a tent on the label are usually a generic, often robusta-heavy blend ground to an all-purpose size that's too fine for a percolator — you're paying extra for a bag that undoes the one variable you actually control. Buy on roast date and grind size, not packaging.

Is the coffee supposed to actually boil, or just simmer?
